Lord Divodas Dhanvantari

The Father of Science and Life.

Dhanvantari is the foremost physician, (Adi-Vaidya), and as such the progenitor of the science and art of long living

(Ayurveda pravartaka).

The Hindu physician of the gods, He was originally a sun god, and prominent in the Vedas. Dhanvantari was identified as the carrier of ambrosia from the primeval ocean and as the teacher of medicine to mankind. In later Hinduism he was regarded as an avatara of Vishnu.

He is counted as one of the fourteen jewels that came out of the ocean after its churning by gods and demons, holding a pitcher of nector (Amrta Kalasa) in his hands.

In accordance with the benediction of Bhagavan Vishnu, Dhanvantari was reborn in the Dvapara-yuga as the son of the king of Kashi named Dhanva.

Dividing Ayurveda into 8 sub-divisions, he made people free of illness. People well versed in medicine and surgery are customarily given the name Dhanvantari.
